Win XP

Windows XP check existing settings
If you have already set up your computer to dial up, but something isn't working correctly, you should check the following settings:

Note: You may need your Windows XP CD

Dialup Networking
If you wish to check the settings for your dial-up connection in Windows XP, click the "Start" button, followed by "Connect to" and then select the "Show all connections" option. In the folder that opens, you should have a 'Intertech Country' icon or something similarly named. Right click the icon and select "Properties" from the menu that appears. You should see the following:

Telephone number: Enter the local dial-in phone number (click here to check your number). There is no need to enter Area code or Country/region code.

Deselect the "Use dialing rules" box.

Select the "Options" tab at the top. You should see the following:

Enable "Display progress while connecting".
Enable "Prompt for name and password, certificate, etc.".
Disable "Include Windows logon domain".
Enable "Prompt for phone number".

Select the "Security" tab at the top. You should see the following:

Security Options: Select "Typical (recommended settings)".
Validate my identity as follows: Select "Allow unsecured password".

Select the "Networking" tab at the top. You should see the following:

Type of dial-up server I am calling: Select "PPP: Windows 95/98/NT4/2000, Internet.
Ensure "Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)" is checked.

Click the "Settings" button. You should see the following:

Enable "Enable LCP extensions".
Enable "Enable software compression".

Click "Ok". Click the "Properties" button. You should see the following:

Select "Obtain an IP address automatically".
Select "Obtain DNS server address automatically".

Click the "Advanced" button. You should see the following:

Enable "Use default gateway on remote network".
Enable "Use IP header compression".

Select the "DNS" tab. You should see the following:

Ensure "Append parent suffixes on the primary DNS suffix" is checked.

Click "Ok" three times to return to connections.

Modems
If you wish to check the modem settings for Windows XP, click the "Start" button, followed by "Control Panel". In the folder that opens, you should have a 'Phone and Modem Options' icon. Right click the icon and select "Open" from the menu that appears. Select the "Modems" tab. You should see the following:

You should have a modem listed in the white box. If there are no modems or more than one modem of the same type, please see our Modem troubleshooting guide.

Click "Properties" and select the "Modem" tab. You should see the following:

Maximum port speed: Select "57600".
Dial Control: Enable "Wait for dial tone before dialing".

Click "OK" twice to return to Control Panel.
