How Do I Type in an Email Address

Return to Main Tutorial Page

When you type an email address, it’s important to be precise so that your message will reach the right recipient.

An email address must have these four parts, or it cannot be sent.

The username
The @ symbol ("at")
(hold down the Shift key  and then press the number 2 on the top row on your keyboard)
The domain or Web site name
The extension, which must be preceded by a period (.)

Take, for example,
auntelva@icisp.net.au
This email address identifies Aunt Elva, who gets her email from icisp.net.au
You would pronounce this address, “Aunt Elva at icisp dot net dot au"

You must enter an email address with correct spelling, including the domain or Web site name and extension.

The email address must always be entered without any spaces or extra characters.

If even one letter or character is missing or entered incorrectly, your email will not arrive at its destination.

The period (.) before the extension is required for delivery.

The letters "www" denote Web site addresses, not email addresses.

.com is not always the extension used in email addresses, although it is the most common. Other extensions include, .net, .net.au .org, .gov, .com.au and .edu.
New ones are added frequently. Your email message can only be delivered if you have the right extension.

please remember: PLEASE DON'T TYPE IN ALL CAPS. IT'S HARD TO READ AND IT'S THE EQUIVALENT TO SHOUTING!
